The field guide to San Francisco's dog parks.

Corona Heights Dog Run

Corona Heights Dog Run sits atop a 520-foot hill composed of ancient Franciscan chert, offering a uniquely rugged and wild urban hiking experience. With 360-degree views spanning from Twin Peaks to the Financial District and natural rock formations millions of years old, this is unlike any other dog park in the city.

Terrain & Layout

The off-leash area features steep trails, exposed bedrock, natural rock formations, and rocky outcrops that make for a challenging and adventurous landscape. The ground varies between wood chip paths, natural dirt trails, and bare rock. The park is completely open and unfenced, so good recall is essential. The small overall footprint is packed with elevation changes and interesting terrain. There is no flat, open play area — this is a trail-based park through and through.

Amenities

  • Seating: Natural rock formations and a few benches
  • Water: Bring your own — there are no water facilities
  • Parking: Street parking in the Corona Heights and Castro neighborhoods
  • Restrooms: Randall Museum restrooms nearby
  • Lighting: No artificial lighting — plan visits during daylight hours

Best For

Agile, sure-footed dogs who love scrambling over rocks and hiking steep trails. Also great for owners who want a workout alongside their dog. Not ideal for elderly dogs or those with mobility issues.

Busy Times

Early mornings attract visitors seeking the spectacular sunrise views. Weekday evenings and weekends see steady but manageable traffic. The park is rarely overcrowded due to its challenging terrain.

Tips

  • Bring water for both you and your dog — there's none available on-site
  • During rainy season (November-March), trails can become slippery and the park may close temporarily after heavy rainfall
  • Wear sturdy shoes — the rocky terrain is rough on sandals and light footwear
