Fort Funston Dog Park

Fort Funston is one of San Francisco's most spectacular off-leash destinations, offering miles of coastal trails, a long flat beach, and dramatic cliff-top views of the Pacific Ocean. Located on the city's western edge near Lake Merced, this expansive park attracts dogs who love sand, surf, and wide-open spaces.

Terrain & Layout

This large, unfenced off-leash area spans coastal bluffs, sand dunes, and a long flat beach along the Pacific shore. Trails wind through cliffs and dunes above the beach, offering varied terrain from sandy paths to grassy blufftop sections. The beach itself provides a massive open area where dogs can run, dig, and splash in the waves. The terrain is rugged and natural — expect sandy, uneven ground and steep sections near the cliff edges. The sheer size of the area means dogs have virtually unlimited room to roam.

Amenities

  • Seating: Benches at key viewpoints along the bluffs
  • Water: A water fountain near the main parking area
  • Parking: Large free parking lot at the main entrance off Skyline Boulevard
  • Restrooms: Portable restrooms available near the parking area
  • Lighting: None — this is an outdoor coastal area best visited during daylight

Best For

Active, adventurous dogs who love beaches, sand, and room to run. Ideal for water-loving breeds and dogs who need extensive exercise. Dogs should have reliable recall since the area is completely open and unfenced, with cliff edges nearby.

Busy Times

Weekend mornings and early afternoons are the busiest, with dog owners coming from across the city. Weekday mornings attract a regular group of locals. Late afternoon can get very windy and cold due to ocean exposure.

Tips

  • Keep dogs away from cliff edges — the bluffs can be unstable
  • The area is also popular for hang gliding, kite flying, and horseback riding, so be aware of other activities
  • Bring towels for the car — your dog will likely be sandy and possibly wet after a visit
