Merced Heights Dog Play Area

Merced Heights Dog Play Area is a fenced, synthetic-turf dog area on the lower terrace of Merced Heights Playground at 801 Shields Street. It opened in May 2023 as the final phase of the park's renovation, honoring the neighborhood's long tradition of bringing dogs to the park.

Terrain & Layout

The off-leash area is a trapezoid-shaped enclosure surfaced with green synthetic turf, surrounded by black fencing with a concrete pad entrance. The renovated lower terrace around it includes an accessible entrance, a rolling natural lawn, fitness equipment, and a butterfly and hummingbird garden.

Amenities

  • Seating: Benches and picnic tables on the lower terrace
  • Water: Drinking fountain on the lower terrace
  • Parking: Street parking on Shields Street and surrounding blocks
  • Accessibility: Accessible entrance to the lower terrace

Best For

Ingleside and Merced Heights neighbors looking for a clean, fenced, mud-free spot for a quick off-leash session. The enclosure is great for dogs still working on recall.

Busy Times

Mornings before work and early evenings are the most popular times with neighborhood regulars. Midday on weekdays is usually quiet.

Tips

  • Turf can get warm on sunny afternoons — bring water for your dog
  • The upper sections of Merced Heights Playground have sweeping views worth a leashed stroll
